This award is presented each year to the outstanding science teacher from a participating school.
THE MARY HAVILAND WSSEF SCIENCE TEACHER OF YEAR
Established by Mary Haviland in 2000 this award consisting of a cash award, a marble plaque, and a traveling trophy. It is presented to a participating Washington State Science and Engineering Fair teacher who:
Stands out from their peers.
Promotes science education among students.
Passion for teaching science as it relates to everyday living.
Makes science fun and realistic for students.
Empowers students to learn science.
Exhibits excellence in teaching.
Is up to date on current scientific methodology, ideas, and concepts.
Encourages science partnerships within the community.
Has not won the award in the previous 5 years.
Nomination can be made by a principal, department head, peer, or science student. The nomination packet should include letters of endorsement, a teaching biography/resume, and a 500 word paper on their views of teaching science and goals.
Packets are due to the Mary Haviland Science Teacher of the Year Selection Committee no later than March 15th.
The selection committee includes entries by a group composed of WSSEF Board members, science teachers/professors/professionals, last year’s winner, and Mary.
The selection will be announced at the WSSEF award ceremony.
